Accra, July 15, 2025 – In a decisive cost-cutting move, President John Dramani Mahama has ordered the immediate cancellation of all fuel allowances and fuel allocations for political appointees. The directive, announced today by the Presidency, is part of broader austerity measures aimed at reducing government expenditure and redirecting funds to priority sectors.

A statement signed by Felix Kwakye Ofosu, Minister for Government Communications and Presidential Spokesperson, emphasized that the move reflects the administration’s commitment to fiscal discipline. “Leadership must bear its share of the sacrifices we ask of the people,” the statement read.

This latest measure follows other belt-tightening steps, including downsizing the government through fewer ministerial appointments, reducing Presidential Office staff, and eliminating satellite TV subscriptions for government offices.

The Presidency did not specify the exact savings expected from scrapping fuel benefits but stressed that the funds would be reallocated to critical areas of national development. The move is likely to spark debate among political appointees accustomed to the perks of office.
