Interpol Issues Red Notice for Ghana’s Ex-Finance Minister

Interpol has issued a Red Notice for Ghana’s former finance minister, Ken Ofori-Atta, who is wanted on charges of using public office for personal gain. Ghanaian prosecutors declared him a fugitive after he failed to appear before an investigative panel, citing medical reasons for being abroad.
Ofori-Atta is accused of causing financial losses to the state, including alleged misconduct in the $58 million national cathedral project. He denies wrongdoing and claims unlawful treatment but has not returned to face charges.
Initially removed from the wanted list in February after promising to return, Ofori-Atta was re-listed in June after missing a scheduled appearance. Prosecutor Kissi Agyebeng said the investigation must proceed without interference.
Ofori-Atta served as finance minister from 2017 to 2024 under the New Patriotic Party (NPP). Following the NPP’s defeat in the December 2024 elections, President John Mahama of the National Democratic Congress launched Operation Recover All Loot, aimed at recovering over $20 billion in alleged corruption. However, critics accuse Mahama of shielding some of his allies from prosecution.
