Pope Francis has passed away at the age of 88, the Vatican confirmed today. The pontiff died peacefully at 07:35 on the morning of Easter Monday, April 21, 2025, at his residence in Casa Santa Marta within the Vatican.

Born Jorge Mario Bergoglio in Buenos Aires, Argentina, he was elected Pope in March 2013 following the resignation of Pope Benedict XVI. Francis made history as the first pope from the Americas and the first Jesuit to hold the position.

In an official statement, Cardinal Kevin Farrell shared the solemn news with the faithful:
“Dearest brothers and sisters, with deep sorrow I must announce the death of our Holy Father Francis. At 7:35 this morning (local time), the Bishop of Rome, Francis, returned to the house of the Father. His entire life was dedicated to the service of the Lord and His Church.”

Cardinal Farrell continued:
He taught us to live the values of the Gospel with fidelity, courage, and universal love, especially in favor of the poorest and most marginalized.

He concluded with a message of faith and gratitude:
“With immense gratitude for his example as a true disciple of the Lord Jesus, we commend the soul of Pope Francis to the infinite merciful love of the One and Triune God.”
