Obama Imposed Arms Embargo on Nigeria During Boko Haram Crisis, Sought Global Isolation of Goodluck Jonathan

H.E Goodluck Jonathan the Former Nigerian President has once again pointed fingers at the U.S. government under Barack Obama, blaming it for his loss in the 2015 presidential election. Jonathan claims that Obama’s administration actively worked against his re-election, influencing world leaders and even deploying naval forces to the Gulf of Guinea to intimidate his government.
These allegations, detailed in the book Against the Run of Play by Segun Adeniyi, paint a picture of a well-coordinated effort to ensure a leadership change in Nigeria. Jonathan alleges that Obama pressured British Prime Minister David Cameron and French President François Hollande to side against him, further isolating his administration on the global stage.
A major sticking point in U.S.-Nigeria relations at the time was the Boko Haram insurgency. The Obama administration imposed an arms embargo on Nigeria, citing human rights abuses by the Nigerian military. Jonathan argues that this decision severely hindered his ability to combat Boko Haram effectively. Meanwhile, his opponents, including then-candidate Muhammadu Buhari, were capitalizing on corruption allegations against his government claims that Jonathan insists were vague and politically motivated.
While Jonathan’s accusations have reignited debates about foreign interference in African elections, independent observers, including the EU, maintained that the 2015 election was fair. The U.S. and UK both defended the outcome, calling it a testament to Nigerian democracy.
